Curried Salmon

There were quite a few of them including my worthless self in my hit list. I wanted to shoot them all point blank to death. Bang! Bang! Bang!

I tried so hard to protect myself from being constantly harassed at workplace. Authorities didn’t wanna make it too big of a deal. (Misdemeanors at workplace go unnoticed and unpunished in some male chauvinist parts of the world. ‘Code of conduct’ gets screwed pretty often. Hard stuff to swallow but no big deal.) Finally I quit my dream job. What else was I supposed to do? Kill ’em all?!

Sick ‘n tired, frustrated, freaked-out, pissed, heartbroken, I locked myself in my room. And started yelling at the walls, throwing stuff in all six directions ( to regain my self-worth. To restore my confidence, I think.)

My Mom-in-law kept on knocking on my door diligently every ten fifteen minutes. “Leave me the hell alone! Can’t I vandalize my own property in my own territory in peace?! I am free to kill myself at any rate I choose!” – I screamed in my head. I ignored her and continued to mind my own business.

She continued to whine and knock for six hours straight. I opened the door to tell her to the face, “STOP driving me crazy!” – Her 75 years old, skinny, bony, worried sick fingers  were holding a plate full of rice and some fish curry. She – calm, collective and poised as ever- said,”Have some food and make my day”.

How did she sense that I needed a friend right then, right there to fill in my emptiness? How did she figure my stone-cold soul, my shattered heart, my starving stomach needed some warm fish and rice?

.

I haven’t got to see my Mom-in-law for the last five years. But Every time I cook curried fish, I think of that disastrous day. I think of her delightfully stubborn presence and the way she saved my soul. That simple food she made for me puffed away my depression and boosted my self-esteem right away🙂

Ingredients:

Tomato 1, medium

Onion 1, small sized

Garlic 4 cloves

Chili flakes 2 pinches

Olive oil 4 tbsp

Salt to taste

Dill, a  handful

Fish 1 lb ( Salmon did great for me but you’re welcome to pick your choice of fish)

Method:

Pat dry washed fish

Make a smooth paste out of first four ingredients

Heat oil in a pan. Saute the paste in medium heat for about ten minutes. Add 1/4 cup water. Let it simmer for 5 minutes.

Add fish flakes/stakes in the pan. Coat well with the mixture. Cook for 10 minutes in high heat with the lid on.

Sprinkle chopped herbs. Serve hot with steamed rice.

.

Now I know, if you are blessed with good friends, you are all set. You are good to go to deal with life; as stress and depression can not exist in friends’ presence. .

  1. looks so nice. would like to try for sure in summer. can I add curd at the end?

    • Yes you can but curd will conflict with tomatoes, I believe. Use either tomatoes or curd. Thanks for stopping by, buddy🙂

  4. Thank you for your recipes and beautiful photos that make me want to start cooking now.

  5. This dish reminded me that plain rice and fisherman’s stew aka curried fish used to be my most favourite dish while I was serving in Nigeria. In good times and bad days, I used to order this dish. Steaming plain rice and spicy fish curry wrapped around with loads of love from a mother figure is just one needs while dealing with a stone-cold soul. Hats off, for penning it down. The dish resembles your courage, openness and the attitude to embrace life with open arms at any point in time.

  6. wow….nice story….Nusrat apu…u r not only an amazing chef ,also a story teller….each of your recipe is a new story which comes with new inspiration and new joy….look at these pictures…wow….mind blowing….yummy too..i am hungry now 😦

  8. ❤❤❤ for this wonderful recipe which i'm surely going to try soon for a special day. my youngest brother used to say 'sorry beyond' when he was little to indicate that he was extremely apologetic. it is because the phrase 'beyond measure' had been explained to him on his request. following his thought, i'll add: THANK YOU BEYOND for everything here…

  16. You are very lucky indeed to have such a wonderful and caring mother-in-law. The salmon is to die for and I love that basket of flowers!

  17. The person who said that “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach” must have been a man (probably a chauvinist one) who either didn’t know or didn’t want to accept that women LOVE to eat too. I rarely get mad. But when I’m mad, I’m at my worst. And the smartest way to tame the storm is to feed me some comfort food.😀

    • Well said !
Thanks for popping over. Loads of love and hugs. Eat, cook, love. That’s the way of life🙂

  18. Food is healing on many levels… so is telling your story. Thanks for sharing a great recipe that speaks to the journey you are on.

    • I’m so honored, Cathy, to have your presence, wisdom, advice, company in my journey. Thanks billion for stopping by and dropping some inspiring words🙂 Love.

  20. just one word i can say right now…..DIVINE …… ur truly a super photographer,a great chef and a great writer…❤❤❤

  21. As usual, beautiful pics of yummy food from Nusrat!🙂 I have never been able to cook Salmon properly — most often it’s not juicy enough. But this recipe inspires me to give it a try again! And love the flowers beside the cooked food….reminds me of a nice summer picnic🙂

    • We arrange picnics pretty much every Sunday. You’re very welcome to join us, whenever you feel like🙂 And thanks a lot for your kind complement. I appreciate that.

  22. Your Mom-in-law sounds like a wonderful woman. How lucky to have her in your life! This recipe sounds so flavorful, really delicious. Thanks for sharing both the story and your recipe.

    • She is very special indeed and we do get along very well. Also, she is super fun to hang out with🙂 Thank you for popping over and dropping your kind note🙂
      Love.

  23. Salute and love to your mother-in-law. I wish every wife in our country had such a friendly and wise Mom.

About the photos and post: Your photos are way too luring and the recipe is simple and great, as usual. I will give this recipe blog 9.5 out of 10.🙂

About the recipe: Garlic and olive oil is two smart addition to this cooking process. I wonder how cooking-smart you are. but why did you just mention “Mint/Thyme/Parsley”, what if I put some coriander on it?

I have never even heard of Salmon Curry, forget about eating. All I ate was grilled or fired salmon. So I think it is an unique idea for a recipe to be cooked. I’d definitely try. Thanks very much for this.🙂

    • I’m flattered to get 9.5 out of 10🙂 Thanks a million for your gracious comment. Do try curried version of Salmon. You won’t regret, I bet. Loads of love for stopping by here.

  24. Nushrat apu, mint leaf is “pudina pata”? Can I use lil bit ginger paste, as I shall cook cat fish.

  26. Beautiful photography, simple but drool-worthy recipe combined with such heart-felt writing. You are an unpretentious foodie!Love

  27. Delicious recipe and beautiful photos ! I love basmati rice! Cast iron frying pan is passionate! I use old cast iron cookware and clay pots! The food is very different cooked in this way!

    • I gotta start using clay pot…thanks for the awesome idea ! Thanks very much for stopping by here, dear🙂

  28. “if you are blessed with good friends, you are all set. You are good to go to deal with life; as stress and depression can not exist in friends’ presence” – so true! The story is as touchy as ur cooking, gardening, the flowers… and also the way u r representing every single thing to us… like a true passionate person who knows how to deal every single moment of life! Whenever I go through ur posts, I just fall in love!❤🙂

    • I appreciate your kind complement, Mahabuba. Your words are as sweet as you are. Tons of love for visiting🙂

  29. Salmon is a fish I relish! Especially so, when it is prepared and presented in such a mouthwatering fashion as Nusrat does! The lively story with a brilliant storytelling skill and the beautifully cooked salmon together create an appetizing atmosphere!
For a compulsive gastronome like me, the cookery outweighs the story behind it and there the drooling starts!
Good luck and best wishes to the Master chef!

    • Waliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii, Thanks a million for dropping those kind, inspiring, nice words. You have no idea how much I appreciate your coming by🙂

  30. That was an awesome lead in to the recipe. I haven’t read IT yet lol. Just found your site and checked out a few of your things, but again, that was funny.

  31. When it comes to food, the senses of taste, smell, and vision are all very much integrated. However, the visual stimulation is known to alter the perception of both smell and taste. Visual characteristics like color, texture, evenness and shape will often influence your expectation of the food served. Hence, the saying goes, you eat with your eyes first.

Your presentation of this “easy to prepare” dish attends to this distinctly. Even though the readers merely view photographs, it opens up the door of imagination where one finds him or herself sitting in a brightly shined garden of magnificent flowers and enjoying a wonderful lunch on a wooden table. The texture of the raw pink Salmon, the cooked fish in the wok and the composition on the served meal, all gradually builds up the expectation of the reader about how the dish will taste. It can even make the readers envisage how the tomato based dish will smell! So, even if you forgot to put any salt in the dish, don’t worry, because the readers are actually enjoying a wonderful meal in their mind.

You have done an excellent job as a food stylist and a food photographer! I could say also as a great cook, but that has to come from those who have experienced this wonderful looking dish on their taste buds. 🙂

    • How did you come up with these beautiful, nice and kind words? They took my breath away🙂 Thanks a million for visiting my humble post. Love.

  32. Powerful story! And, if possible, an even more powerful dish! Love the looks of this, and I need to try curried salmon – I think I’ve had everything else curried, but never salmon for some strange reason! Good stuff – thanks.

    • Thank you so very much for your kind complement ! I’m happy to have you come by. And I insist you to try curried Salmon. You won’t regret🙂

  33. That was definitely not the place to work. I am glad you quit! Isn’t it nice to have someone by you when you are sad and mad. Truly speaking, I would have done the same, stayed out and cried my heart out, but it’s good you opened the door after all🙂 That’s a beautiful emotion you shared out there and I am sure your mom in law feels proud of you!

    • Hey sweetheart, thanks for your lovely words. I’m honored that you took some time in reading my post🙂 My mom-in-law is truly very special. And we get along very well🙂

  34. You have such a lovely space Suborno. Loving your recipes and your clicks and its so wonderful to read a post so genuine and heartfelt. will be dropping by your soace often. Thanks for stopping at Ma Niche.

  35. Thats a nice dish, both curries and salmon are my faves. This just puts them together, yum!!!!!

  36. You take gorgeous pictures, and we love salmon in our house! This looks delicious!

  37. Apu, your cooking and presentations are as usual awesome. But I couldn’t stop my tears after reading that live moment you lived, Hates off to all mothers once again. lots of love❤

    • Tons of love to you back, sweetheart. Looks like you have similar fun memories. Thank you so very much for sharing your thoughts here. Hugs.

  38. Great post, loved reading your blog. The pictures were inspirational for any food lovers. Hope to see more amazing posts like this.

  39. It saddens me to hear that you had such a horrible, disheartening work experience and had to quit your dream job😦 Thank goodness for the revitalizing power of food, and more importantly, the loving people behind the food who want to erase your tears and make you feel better. Your mother-in-law sounds like a truly lovely woman, and I’m going to have to try that salmon recipe on my own not so awesome days! Love the honesty in your blog.

  40. Damn these salmon looks so yummy . Mostly i have my salmons grilled / pan fried / salad / sandwich . But curry looks promising . Thank taking me to a new way . will try it soon .

I’m blessed to have YOU in my friend circle🙂 Hugs.

  43. Wow fantastic recipe. Can it be prepared with hilsha fish? Why don’t we use some fish sauce here!!

    • Thanks for visiting🙂 Yes, I guess, this recipe will fit for Hilsa too. And I didn’t use fish sauce as I want to keep it authentic. This is a copy-cat recipe of my Mom-in-law. She never used fish sauce and stuff like that in her curries.

  44. I’m so gonna try this recipe in a week or two. Fish is something that I can never cook well and probably I’ve found a life changing recipe. Thank you!!!
